Drebbel had ook een chemische oplossing voor het ademprobleem bedacht. Een van zijn ontdekkingen was namelijk de ontleding van kalisalpeter (kaliumnitraat) bij verhitting. Daarbij komt een gas vrij dat Drebbel gewoon 'lucht' of levensstof noemde, maar waar twee eeuwen later een andere naam aan gegeven zou worden: elementair zuurstof!
